In 2022 Roe v. Wade was overturned and, state by state, women lost the right to choose. On what is known as the “Edge of America,” women surfers of Folly Beach, South Carolina responded and the message was clear:
As a community, we acknowledge that when we surf we are in our bodies. We own our bodies. We reckon with being at the mercy of nature, but we recognize that we are not at the mercy of whatever society pins on us. It is here, in this space, that we as women are stronger together. Which is why that year, and every year since, we paddle against the patriarchy.
For every Paddle Against the Patriarchy shirt sold, 50% of the proceeds will go to Palmetto State Abortion Fund, which provides financial, emotional, and logistical support to all South Carolinians seeking abortion services.
